Jan, that happened to us, too! On our evening tundra excursion, we were parked for a while with several bears around. At one point, one wandered right up beneath the grate and snuffled our feet. I knelt down and peered at its face, inches away. Such a wonder! Lillian, go when you can; your life will be forever changed!

We went with Nathab to Churchill a few years ago and what I remember most was standing at night on the steel mesh floor at the back of the Tundrabuggy whilst a large polar bear underneath rose up and sniffed at my feet. The most amazing thing for me was that I could actually hear it breathing. It was such a privilege to be so close.

As one who witnessed the sights Wendy described along with the joy on her daughter's face during those polar bear encounters, I can only second Wendy's recommendation to take your children along to see the wild creatures. I encourage any grand parent to do likewise as a gift that a child will long remember. This is a trip that one can do at any age.

NatHab and those terrific guides and drivers will make it easy for everyone.

I've just come home from my fifth trip. After discovering the bears, I have little desire to go elsewhere. Nothing else can compare. I've been nose-to-nose with a bear a couple of times, and as you describe, it's a transcendent moment. NatHab takes good care of me, and I never feel frightened of the bears. Perhaps my furry friends like me for that. Like the bear your daughter touched, I just sense from them an immense mutual curiosity and need to reach out. And like your daughter, I'm always the one with my nose plastered up against the windshield.

Hi to Bill from Diane. And to everyone else: Please, just love the bears.

Wow! What an adventure! This is definately something on my "bucket list." I can only imagine the awe, when one of these (deceivingly) cuddly creatures came nose-to-nose with your daughter. It sounds like a trip of a lifetime!

I will think of how I'm helping the bears, every time I turn off the lights. Happy hunting!

Great adventure. After a day of watching these giants of the north snow play and rest, we experienced a sky filled with a multicolored sunset to paint the bottom of low clouds highlighting the route guide Bill, and his exhausted visitors, traveled to home base. The week's journey ended with "Fred", a red fox, seeming to laugh at mere mortals in his land of fun and learning.
