Antarctic krill comprise about 45 percent of a leopard seal’s diet, but they also feed on penguins and other marine mammals, such as Antarctic fur seals, crabeater seals and Weddell seals.

When National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen jumped in the waters off Antarctica to photograph a leopard seal, he never expected her to play the perfect host—and offer him a snack.

The huge seal began to bring him food: live penguins. When he didn’t partake, she brought him different fare—weak and dead ones.

Sometimes, even if you’re an accomplished top predator, you just can’t seem to please your guests!
